Tips on Slurry Treatment

The slurry flocculant can adsorb and bridge the solid particles or aggregates in the slurry, so that the fine particles can be bridged into flocs of large particle groups, so as to achieve the purpose of self-gravity settlement or removal by mechanical equipment.

At present, the technological process of sand mechanism sand in China is as follows: the pebbles or ores are broken by crushing machinery, and the sand and stone are washed by sand washing equipment to obtain fine sand with less mud content. This process produces a large amount of sewage, the main pollutant is sediment, in which sludge suspended in the water, difficult to settle, direct discharge of water pollution is serious. At present, the sedimentation tank method used in the industry covers a large area, treatment time is long, sediment extraction is not easy, tank car transport method, high cost, can not fundamentally solve the problem.

In recent years, most of them have adopted this kind of process system, such as mud water collection sedimentation tank, secondary settling tank, clear liquid tank, mud sand separation system, dosing system, drainage system and slag discharge system. The working principle is as follows: the mud water is collected into the sedimentation tank through the pipeline, and pretreated by the mud dehydrator to remove most of the fine sand and part of the mud in the mud water, and the filtrate enters the secondary settling tank through the drainage system. The mud water of the secondary settling tank is suspended mud, and the specific gravity difference with water is very small, it must be treated with flocculant. After the mud water is treated by dehydrator, the mud sand branch removal rate is more than 95%, and the water in the clear liquid tank can be returned directly to the sand washing system, and the real zero discharge can be achieved.

Slurry flocculant is usually used with water ratio between 0.1% and 0.3%, then after mixing dissolved into glue-like water, then added to the mud sewage sand washing circulating water outlet for mixing, can quickly precipitate the suspended matter in the sewage in a few seconds, sand washing yard mud sewage is a kind of water containing fine mud particles suspended matter, and the amount of mud content is very high, so it is recommended to do a small test, determine the proportion of mud precipitator after adding, can be large quantities of sediment washing.

Common Failures & Solutions of Mud Treatment Equipment

Mud treatment equipment as a kind of separation device used to treat mud and separate liquid and solid in various sectors. Due to the facts that mud usually has the property of corrosiveness, or the treatment equipment has been in service for a certain period, some improper operation is made in use or other reasons, it is avoidably easy to cause some malfunctions or equipment failure, resulting to the device cannot work properly as expected. What are the common failures of mud separation equipment? What should be done when the mud separation equipment fails? Here are listed some common failures and corresponding repair methods for your reference.

1.Mud separation equipment idling
If the main motor idling occurs during the operation of the mud separation equipment, the power supply should be cut off first in this situation, and then the cover should be opened to check whether it is due to the material stuck in the equipment.

2.The effect of mud dehydration weakened compared with before
When the separation equipment is not able to handle the mud at run time to achieve the previous separation effect, operator can try to change a parameter at a time, or do some simple debugging to see if the failure can be accordingly solved or not. If not, then turn to the technical staff or the equipment supplier for help, and the pre-requisit is to ensure safety.

3.Mud separation equipment stops running for unknown reason.
In response to this situation, new mud separation equipment accessories can be used to replace suspicious accessories for testing, which is a relatively simple and effective treatment methods. Such method is suitable for some circuit board systems and other aspects of the problem solving. If the replacement of suspicious parts with new components can not solve the existing malfunction, operator should get the original parts back, which is less costly and more effective.

The above introduces several common failures of mud treatment equipment. In addition to the timely solution after the failure, in order to ensure the normal and safe use of mud separation equipment, operator should also carry out routine maintenance, carry out refueling maintenance for rotation of the fittings once a month , and at the same time check the lubrication of the bearing operation whether there is wear phenomenon, or whether the parts in the brake device is worn. Seriously worn parts should be replaced in time.

The mud treatment equipment produced by GN has the advantages of strong environmental adaptability and low failure rate, and generally has low requirements for the working environment and operators. If there are minor failures in peacetime, attend it timely repair, do a good job of maintenance, and the basic equipment can ensure a long service life.

GN Desilter capacity starts with 528, 156, and 1584 GPM. Desiltier option with 8, 12, and 16 PCS. Feeding size is DN150 and Output size is DN200. Desilter: Cut Point+20 Microns

Vertical Cuttings Dryer

The GN Vertical Cutting Dryer uses centrifugal force to dry drilled solids in oil or synthetic base fluids. A stainless-steel screen bowl traps “wet” solid and accelerates them up 900RPM with G force to 420G. GN Vertical Cuttings Dryer specially designed for drilling cuttings from Oil Based Mud(OBM) and Synthetic-based Mud (SBM).

The GN Vertical Cutting Dryer uses FAG Brand premium bearing. The Flights on the rotor is hard facing to HRC 65, longer life than our competitors. Specially designed highly precise stainless-steel screen to ensure your better separation, longer life, and easy replacement. With high-pressure air knife design to clean the basket screen automatically to avoid the screen blinding especially for high viscosity mud and water-based mud. Individual oil lubrication system with automatic alarm for pressure limit. The main motor and oil pump motor is interlocked with each other for avoiding the start of the main motor prior to the start of the oil pump motor. All around flushing system through a specially designed nozzle to avoid the block of the liquid discharge channel. The screen itself is individually balanced for future replacement. And the screen is separated from the frame which allows you to change the screen only, not need to change the frame inside. The flights and the rotor assembly are individually balanced for future replacement. The liquid is forced through the screen bowl openings, while “dry” solids are extracted by the angled flights attached to the cone, which rotate slightly slower than the bowl. Tungsten carbide protects the flights from abrasive solids and ensures long operational life. This aids in maintaining a constant gap between the scroll and screen bowl, which is crucial for proper operation.GN Vertical Cuttings Dryer Centrifuge unit offers a waste management solution to effectively clean and dispose of drilling solids and maximize drilling fluid returns specific to operational needs.

The mystery of decanter centrifuge

We are very familiar with the process of settlement, where solids in liquid fall down to the bottom of a container, leaving liquid phase crystal clear. This is the case when we sit a cup on top a desk, fill it with water including some solids. After some time the solids will settle at the bottom. Equipment like this is called clarifier.

However, this process happens in natural gravity and it takes too long for the solids to settle down. Then people thought centrifugal force may help to speed up this process. So they tried to tie a bottle on one end of a rope and rotated the rope at certain speed. They found that the settlement happened much quicker. This initiated the decanter centrifuge, which works on the same principle as the rope except that decanter is more complex, withstand more load, and make the settlement process much faster.

With decanter centrifuge the separation of solids from liquid is greatly expedited. For instance it can take hours for solids to separate from liquid while it takes only a few second to achieve the same result. This is because G force generated at decanter centrifuge is a few thousand time that of regular gravity.

There are many factors controlling the performance of decanter centrifuge, but among them the following four factors are most influential.

  1. Centrifugal force generated. This determines separation efficiency. When the gravity difference between solids and liquid become very small, exceptional strong G force is need to separate solid from liquid. This also applies to small particles, in the magnitude of microns, as buoyance is in the same magnitude of gravity force an the particles will float in the liquid;
  2. Differential speed required to send settled solids from decanter centrifuge
  3. Design of screw conveyors
  4. Settlement section for particular type of applications.

There are much more considerations in practical applications.

Consideration of the application of decanter centrifuge

Many people know that decanter centrifuge works on the principle of centrifugal force, which makes heavier solids to settle down on bowl wall and lighter liquid phase to “float” on top of the deposited solids. However, there is much more to take into consideration when decanter centrifuge is to be applied to different applications.

The first consideration is the capability required to in the production process. This can differ tremendously, from a few million liter per minute to thousands of cubic meters per hour. This is mainly due to economic consideration.

The other consideration is the length and diameter of rotating bow. The longer the rotating bowl, the longer slurry takes to travel the whole length, and therefore better settlement of the solids. This is particularly important when lighter solids phase is to be separated from the liquid. If the solids is much heavier, such as barite in drilling process, bowl length does not need to be that long. It is common for the length of rotating bowl to be 2, 3 or even 4 times the diameter of rotating bow.

Another consideration is the conical section of decanter centrifuge bowl, this concerns the texture of the solids to be separated. If solids is easily compactable, a bigger angle can be applied so as to increase throughput speed. However if the solids to be separated is quite lose, and difficult to get compacted, a gentle angle is usually required to have them compressed properly before being discharged from the rotation bowl.

One important factor is the centrifugal force. There is much to consider when this factor is to be considered. In a slurry there is always liquid in between solids particles. The finer the solids particle is, the more liquid content, therefore a much larger centrifugal force will be needed to move liquid content out from between solids particles.

A new perspective to clean mud tanks

Drilling activity is the process to establish communication channels for oil and gas to rush up to the ground. There must be a big number of mud tanks to support the normal progress of oil and gas drilling. Usually these mud tanks need to be cleaned, to prevent cross contamination, to prepare the tank for inspection, or simply for storage.

This task is usually done by people. Workers will wear heavy protective clothes, and use respirators, to go down inside the mud tank to clean the interior of mud tanks manually. As there is no lighting in the tank, illumination is required as well. As drilling technique is getting more and more complex, a lot of chemicals are added to drilling mud. These chemicals may be a serious thread to the workers. Confined space, potential toxic material (liquid or gas), dim environment, high temperature are big risks to people exposed to it. This inevitably give tension to people’s psychology and impact work efficiency adversely.

GN Solids Control has been involved in finding a good solution to get rid of this problem. After years of research and development work, GN Solids Control worked out the first generation of automatic tank cleaning system a few years ago. People at drilling rigs gave high appraisal to this system as it released them from difficult and dangerous cleaning environment. They also pointed out issues with the application of the system, which helped GN Solids Control to continue its R&D to make the system better.

Recently GN Solids Control released its third generation of automatic tank cleaning system. Compared to previous generations, the new system features the following:

  1. High efficiency. The new system can clean a mud tank in 20 minutes. Compared to 6 to 9 hours needed to clean a mud tank by 4 people, the new system only requires at most 2 people. This increase mud tank cleaning efficiency substantially;
  2. It minimizes worker’s exposure to difficult and confined space. All system operation needs to do is to mount the cleaning head inside mud tank and all other work will be done automatically. Some clients of this system have huge number of mud tanks to clean. They use top cover mechanism to lower cleaning head into mud tanks. This eliminates the exposure of people to risky environment.;
  3. Water consumption is minimized. Water is valuable, especially in remote area where drilling rigs are located. Drilling rigs often have very limited water supply and do not want to use their water, which is usually trucked in from far away. Manual cleaning used open loop process – flushed down slurry will be dumped and the water is wasted. This new style automatic tank cleaning system contains solids-water separation equipment, which can settle solids down efficiently and reuse the water for cleaning. It significantly reduced water consumption, the quantity of slurry dumped to the environment, and the cost to truck the slurry to recycling station & to truck in fresh water;
  4. New technology increases solid/water separation efficiency. This system can provide high flow rate to provide enough cleaning media and good pressure to wash mud tanks. If natural settling technique is used for such high flow rate, separation result can not be guaranteed. GN Solids control uses new technology which can separate solid from the slurry effective and efficiently and return clean water back to the cleaning head. Field experience shows that most of the solids are separated from slurry and cleaning quality is well secured;
  5. GN Solids Control also uses other new technology to transfer slurry from mud tanks to the cleaning system, which can not be achieved by routine technique;
  6. Automatic control. This system can also automatically control system operation to prevent dry suction or tank overflow.

There are other new technologies GN Solids Control uses to make the system do its job as is intended. Please contact us for more information and solutions for your tank cleaning needs.

An efficient way of transferring sludge

There is always the need to transfer material other than liquid from one place to another. Examples are everywhere, from coal mine to construction side, from steel mills to agriculture.

There are many ways to transfer such material as well, from trucking, to tanking, etc., featuring high cost and low efficiency.

There is limitation for the above means of transferring non-liquid material too. For instance, transferring coal bring the potential of environment contamination. Other means of the movement of such materials is in bad need.

Vacuum pump manufactured by GN Solids Control solves this problem.

GN vacuum pump can transfer sludge, solids particles ( no more than 50mm or 75mm in size) to locations up to 1000m from pump location.

GN vacuum pumps uses venturi pipe to generate vacuum, and sucks sludges from tanks, pits, etc., and sends them to the closed buffer tanks. After a pre-set material level is established inside the buffer tank, the vacuum pipe will stop sucking and compressed air is applied into the tank to force the material inside the buffer tank to go outward. Because the high pressure of the compressed air, sludges can be transferred a long distance.

The advantages of GN vacuum pump are:

  1. Safety. For instance mine camp waste can be safely transferred by vacuum pump. Other material such as life sludge can be transferred without affecting the health of the operator;
  2. Environmentally friendly. Because the complete sucking & discharing & transferring process is done in a sealed pip route, no material is being leaked out from the route and there is no contamination to the environment;
  3. High efficiency: GN vacuum pump has the capability of 10m3/h, 20m3/h and 40m3/h without the assistance of other machinery;
  4. Flexibility: GN vacuum pumps can be used to transfer sludge, liquid, solids, tail mine, construction waste, from tanks, pits, river, etc., almost from any locations;
  5. Versatile. Such pumps can also be used as a mobile equipment. It can be mounted on a truck, on a boat. For instance, it can be mounted on a vessel, suck up a dredge in a water surrended location, and transfer the dredge to the land.

GN vacuum pump has great potential in industry and daily life. If you have want to know more about this vacuum pump please visit www.gnsolidscontrol.com.
