Last week we delivered several sets cutting drying high G shale shaker to offshore drilling platform. These shaker are specially designed for offshore drilling waste management application. This high G shaker was used to treat drilling cutting. The vibration G force can more than 8 G, and the normal shaker is 7.5 G. This shaker can recycle partial drilling mud from drilling cutting and dryer cutting to convenient transporation. It is helpful to reduce transport cost and for the further process. The selection of shale shaker in drilling

The drilling well site must be equipped with at least one vibrating screen. The purpose of shale shaker and other solid removal equipment is the same, which is to reduce the drilling cost. Drilling fluid always require the particle size and content in drilling fluid. Shale shaker can remove out the big size solids contend in the drilling fluids backed from well. If there solids can not be removed timely, which may cause lots problems in drilling.

Consider whether to use a coarse mesh screen. When a large amount of drilling cuttings or clay returns to the wellhead, it is necessary to use a coarse mesh screen. Generally speaking, when the drilling fluid flow rate exceeds 1000gal / min in a 17 in diameter open hole, it is required to use a coarse mesh screen before using a fine mesh shale shaker. Finally, the number and type of main shale shakers used to treat all drilling fluids should be selected. The selection goal is to let the non weighted drilling fluid pass through the most detailed screen cloth as much as possible. For weighted drilling fluid, the use goal of shale shaker is to make all drilling fluid pass through API 200 mesh screen cloth (too fine screen cloth will remove more weighting agent).

The selection of screen cloth. it is said that some professional software can be used to select the mesh number of vibrating screen cloth. However, the data used in these software are basically obtained from the cobalt well fluid prepared in the laboratory, so they have some limitations. Any drilling fluid treatment agent formula may reduce the treatment capacity of the shale shaker system. For example, cobalt well fluid containing starch is difficult to screen, because starch, as a good filtrate reducer, tends to “paste” the fine screen holes. The drilling fluid with high static shear force is also difficult to pass through the fine screen. Therefore, the vibrating screen cloth that should be used to deal with a certain fluid flow rate is not introduced here. The selection of screen cloth for various drilling fluid shale shakers is mainly determined by repeated test method. It is best to contact the manufacturer and ask for suggestions on the selection of screen cloth in this area.

The Application of Shale Shaker in Drilling Mud Treatment

Shale shaker is a conventional equipment used to separate solid phase from circulating drilling fluid. There are many shapes and types of shale shakers. Commonly used are

Although vibrating screens of other shapes have been in trial use, they have not been commercialized. Most vibrating screens adopt rectangular screen cloth. Large solid particles are removed at the bottom of the vibration. Small solid particles and drilling fluid flow through the screen surface and re-enter the circulation system. The solid in the drilling fluid greater than 74um is unfavorable to the performance of the drilling fluid. Api200 mesh (74um) vibrating screen is formulated on this basis. Only 3% of the weighting materials that meet the API classification standards have a particle size greater than 74um. The screen mesh is larger than 74um. Under this size, most barite will be removed from the drilling fluid, which will seriously affect the performance of the drilling fluid and the drilling cost. Vibrating screen is the most important and earliest equipment used for solid phase removal, which plays a very important role in solid control system. It is the first line of defense after the drilling fluid returns to the surface from the wellbore, which generally has a great impact on the cost. However, if the damaged screen cloth is used, the cobalt well fluid does not pass through the screen cloth, and the mesh number of the screen cloth is improperly selected or partially damaged, the next solid control system will not operate normally. Shale shaker is suitable for any type of drilling fluid. The selection of screen cloth is determined by circulation speed, shale shaker structure, borehole properties, drilling fluid performance and other factors. Many properties of drilling fluid show the processing capacity of screen cloth.

The Effect of gas invasion on drilling fluid

During the drilling process, the density of drilling fluid will be reduced and increase the viscosity after being invaded by natural gas or air. The decrease of drilling fluid density leads to the decrease of hydrostatic column pressure, which may lead to blowout, well collapse and other malignant accidents. Therefore, the gas invasion drilling fluid is very dangerous, and measures must be taken to deal with it correctly.

After drilling to the natural gas reservoir, the gas probably invade the drilling fluid, and we are sure the air will invade the drilling fluid during the working process of shale shaker, cyclone and mud agitator. The density of drilling fluid decreases obviously after gas invasion, but the influence on the hydrostatic column pressure in the well is much smaller than people think. The reason is that the invading gas is compressible and the density of drilling fluid will increases gradually with the depth of the well. In these two case, there are 2 different pressure gas. So It is dangerous to make a decision to use weighting method to make up for the density reduction only based on the reduction of drilling fluid density that has been invaded by gas, which may lead to the excessive density of drilling fluid , fracturing the formation and polluting the production formation. It will reduce the ROP, cause leakage and lead to the decrease of liquid level in the well, and then blowout.

In order to restore the density of drilling fluid, the most effective means is to use degasser. GN solids control can provide two degasser. The normal poorboy degasser and vacuum degasser. First kind is installed before shaker. Received the drilling mud from well, and vacuum degasser installed between mud cleaner. There are seven basic systems for solid phase control. The first system is the most basic, which is suitable for non weighted drilling fluid. The system largely rely on desander and desilter. During fast drilling, the desilter should be started continuously. The second system added Decanter centrifuge based on the first solids control system. Decanter centrifuge are used to remove out the tiny particle. It can clean mud and also reduce mud gravity. Drilling Particle Introduction

In solids control project, the solids content and particle size both are the most important data for user to select suitable separation equipment. And the include particle will also effective the drilling efficiency. Different working condition will generate the different size particle. The range of particle sizes taken into the mud stream at the bit will depend mainly on:
Formation hardness Bit type;Chip hold down; and Effectiveness of the hydraulic hole cleaning action. Even if adequate hydraulics are being used and chip hold down or differential pressures normal, in hard formations fine chips will usually be generated. Most of the particles are finer than 22 microns. Another reason for fine chips is the bit type..a diamond bit will generate smaller chips than a rock bit in hard formations. Use of a water base mud will result in smaller chips than oil mud because of hydration and dispersion effects of the aqueous system. Use of a water base mud for drilling a soft shale formation will ordinarily result in very fine cuttings. With an oil mud and a cone bit, most of the cuttings are larger than 30 microns. Use of a PDC bit will produce cuttings which are typically much larger.The particle size distribution is also affected by mechanical degradation. As the particles are circulated up by the mud return system, they are mashed and ground. The corners are broken off, so that continually smaller and smaller particles are being generated.Borehole stability is a factor affecting the mechanical degradation of formation solids brought to the surface by the mud system. If the hole is enlarged by erosion or sloughing.cuttings cannot be lifted from the hole efficiently. Low annular velocity in the enlarged sections of hole will cause cuttings to fall back and be ground to a finer size before reaching the surface.

Dewatering is to remove out liquid from solid as much as possible. As usually, user want to get the discharged solids much dryer much better. To reach this target, the sludge need to stay more longer time inside centrifuge bowl, and solids content of discharged liquid is high relatively speaking. The cone angel was designed smaller to speed liquid discharge ,and make solid phase stay longer time in side centrifuge. Totally opposite with dewatering centrifuge ,clarifying centrifuge require to bigger cone angel as much as possible. Big cone angel will increase the length of liquid processing section, which can make the liquid stay longer inside centrifuge. User usually can get the clean liquid and wet solids. Except the above both types , separation centrifuge make it balance for discharge solids and liquid. Cone angel is in the middle between dewatering and clarify.
The cone angel of centrifuge decided the application of decanter. So when we select centrifugal model ,we need to clear what purpose we want, what treating capacity you need, and also the solids content. The centrifuge capacity is depend on the solids content of material. High content will reduce capacity. Except this, we also need to pay attention to bowl material. As usually ,centrifuge use the high strength stainless steel such as SSR 205,316L. When process slurry with chloridion , make sure the chloridion content is below the Limit, otherwise it will corrosive steel ,and damage it.

This dewatering system was used to treat the sludge dredged from Quebec lake. Remove out the solids and clench the water, and then discharge water back lake. It is a huge system, actually our equipment is just partial of the whole project, and in charges of the mechanical separation. After our system, it also equipped other machine for the water purification. What we provide is shale shaker, desander, desilter , Decanter centrifuge, screw conveyor and also mud tank. The sludge transfer into shale shaker and desander for primary separation to remove out the big size particle. Until now, the waste water-based drilling fluid can be directly discharged into the surrounding environment without any treatment. In many areas, government regulations prohibit the use of chromium containing substances, such as chromium lignosulfonate. In many areas, the use of chloride, nitrate and potassium salts in drilling fluid is forcibly limited, or the more common practice is the total conductivity of drilling fluid. Oil based drilling fluid, especially offshore, tends to be more limited than water-based drilling fluid, only oil-based drilling fluid with zero discharge measures (sometimes referred to as closed-loop system) can be used. In the United States, if the toxicity and biodegradability of synthetic based drilling fluid meet the standard requirements and do not produce fluorescence, it can usually be directly discharged into the sea. From this point of view, although the direct cost of synthetic based drilling fluid is generally higher than that of oil-based drilling fluid, its treatment cost is often lower. In this way, the use of synthetic based cobalt drilling fluid can be more economical than oil-based drilling fluid.
