Solid control is very critical during the oil and gas drilling process, it will maintain the required property of the drilling mud and remove the low gravity solids from the liquid, and finally can make the drilling mud which could be reused and recycled in the drilling mud system. A good solid control process could increase the rate of penetration, reduce the wear and tear of the drilling equipment, such as the pistons, liners of the mud pump and allow for better hole cleaning.

GN’s solid control equipment can perform very well during the drilling process, and most of them are specially designed as compact, skid mounted and very mobile. One consumable part for the solid control equipment is the shale shaker screen. This year GN made a lot of effort in the improvement for the screens. GN launched its second facility specially for making the shaker screens of composite frame. Now GN has composite frame replacement screens available for MONGOOSE, KING COBRA/ VENOM, FLUID SYSTEM.

Now GN plans to promote its composite screens aggressively in North America, and it’s looking for new distributors. GN Solids Control will be exhibited in Global Petroleum Show the GPS show in Calgary Canada this June 12-14th. Ths GPS show is one of the largest Oil and Gas Equipment and Technology show in Canada. It will be hosted in Calgary every year and welcome clients from many different countries to be at Calgary and trying to find out what is the next step for creating business and industry direction for the Canadian market.  Even though the industry is still not at its upturn, GN still presented its strength in the Canadian market and demonstrated its latest technology and products.

Oil and Gas Industry is changing its pace every year, from conventional drilling to unconventional drilling to pad drilling. So the industry traditional mud recycling system is gradually replaced by automatic, systematic and close-looped mud recycling system. More drilling contractors have equipped cutting dryers with their mud processing system. The cutting dryer can meet the environmental requirement and recover and recycle more material for reuse.

Today let’s get to know one of our key equipment which is our cutting dryer. It works in both Drilling waste management and flowline management system, and show great work performance. There are two types of cutting dryer, fixed speed and VFD. GN can manufacture them suitable for different customer’s requirements and service them after sales. The screen bowl’s maximum diameter is 930mm. And there are three different kind of screens for your choice, 250 micron, 350 micron and 500 micron. The handling capacity is 30 to 50 tons per hour. Tungsten carbide protect the flights on the rotor from abrasive solids and ensure longer operation life. The special design of high pressure air knife can clean the basket screen automatically and easily, and avoid the screen to be blinded by the viscosity mud and water based mud. The flushing system with specially designed nozzles around the body of cutting dryer can avoid the liquid discharge channel being blocked by sediments. The lubrication system is electrically interlocked with the main motor starter to prevent machine operation in the event of low or no oil pressure to the gearbox. The VFD control panel can facilitate soft starting, fingertip control of the VFD system can change the motor speed and thus the G force can be changed to the working conditions. The VFD system is made by ABB or SIEMENS and it is explosive proof.

While Oil rig perform the drilling into the earth core, it needs to break soil and rocks apart.  Some layers often is harder than other so drilling operation will use additive to strength the drill bit to break the layer.  The additive that uses combine the rock sometimes will cause the harm of environment.

Underground of earth is not totally solid and sometime it contains the layer of water like underground river.  When water mix with the drilling process, it contains several of heavy metal ion and anion.  Such content in water will change the stability of the drilling fluid that affect the performance of the fluid.  When water is in the drilling fluid increasing, the various additives will be added into the drilling fluid.  The mixture of drilling fluid and additive is harmful to the environment if reach to surface and not properly treated.

The calcium, gypsum. Salt to name a few that mixing with additive is common and needed but harmful to environment.  The mud treating system is serving the purpose to contain, filter and recondition the drilling mud for continuous usage.

The volume of drilling mud tank needs to be large enough to accommodate the maximum cycle volume of the drilling mud in the oil well drilling process, and have enough mud reserve capacity.  At the same time the tanks also have the abilities of participating in cycle and controlling the oil well if an emergency sudden happen. In recent years, with the developing of the global markets and the increasing demand of drilling fluid solids control systems by drilling craft, the drilling mud tanks have the demand of increase the volume size.

If the drilling mud tank size increase, the cost of moving drill rig and drilling fluid will be increased as well. For this reason, reasonable cubage is the goal which pursued by end-users. According to the well drilling practice by many years in the past, it uses the method of calculation of drilled well hole cubage or drilled well casing cubage to calculate the effective cubic contains of the drilling fluid solids control system in general. The results of the two methods of calculation are estimated.

In a set of solids control system, the size of the single drilling mud tank and the amount of the cycle in the tank are decided by the height of the derrick substructure, the local transportation situation, and the effective treating volume of the drill rig needed and many other factors that will consider.

The top of the mud tank should have enough space to install needed solids control equipments, mud agitator and drill rig transfer pumps. Moreover, the settings of the associated flow line of the drilling mud, accessories, pump inhalation, water pipeline and the space of various equipments needs be considered. The basic parts of the centrifugal pump are rotate impeller.  The speed of impeller is depends on the use of the motor.  The impeller is in the snail-like shell shape casting with curved blade that tied with pump impeller axis and pump shaft driven to perform high speed rotation.   The pump casing central suction inlet and suction piping connections, suction pipe bottom with one-way bottom valve. Outlet beside pump shell connects wih outlet piping equipped with regulating valve. The impeller of such a pump is magnetically coupled with the motor, across a separation wall which is resistant to the fluid pumped. The motor drives a rotor carrying one or several pairs of permanent magnets, and these drag around a second pair(s) of permanent magnets attached to the pump impeller. For the centrifugal pumps that function properly, it needs to be filled with mud prior turn on the pump for working at its own function.  If the pump casing becomes filled with vapors or gases, the pump impeller becomes gas-bound and incapable of pumping.

Drilling fluid serve as lubricant for the drilling bit and it needs filter the solids that produce while the drill bit drilling into earth.  While drilling into the earth, broken solids from the underground mix into the drilling fluid will decrease the lubricant performance and will cost damages of the drill bit that will also result drilling operation on hold that leads increase of operation cost. The solids control machinery ensure the solids separation to ensure the continues operation of the drilling rig to achieve consist operation cost and time efficiency.  Shale shaker, Vacuum degasser, mud cleaner and centrifuge are the basic machinery to achieve the filtrations of solids for the drilling fluid.

Shale shaker is the first step solids control machinery to filter the drilling fluid that filter the large solids by continue shaking force by motors and various API numbers of shale shaker screen.  While it is the first step of filtrations, the result will determine following machineries’ filtering process.

Mud cleaner is continue process of the filtration after the shale shaker by eliminating smaller solids that pass through shale shaker screen. The desander, desilter and shale shaker combine as mud cleaner and use different of API number screen to achieve mid level of filtration solids fluids.

Centrifuge is machinery use centrifugal force by rotating in rpm force to achieve remove finest solid, recovering barite and controlling the density and viscosity of the drilling fluid to make sure the drilling fluid is debris free as much as possible so the drilling fluid can be return back to the rig.

Zero-discharge mud recycle system is loop system that use the drilling mud continually  while performing filtering for solids that contain in the mud.  The function is similar human’s blood system.  To treat the mud properly through solids control, the mud system need to consider in points below:

  • Drilling rig type and spec
  • Speed of the drilling process
  • Solids that will be filter
  • bore length
  • The gallon per minute (GPM) of the pumps
  • Volume and amount of tanks that are needed
  • How many and what size of hydrocyclone
  • The filter screen size for shale shaker and mesh number

These factors determine your mud system that is adequate enough to clean the mud and protect the components and the drill bit of the rig, pumps and mud cleaners.

Treating Capacity:  Rule of thumb, double the actual treating capacity.

The mounting of system; trailer or skid.  Trailer mount is need mount on trailer and it becomes part of the system.  Skid mount is detachable from the flat transportation method.

Shale shaker screen area: Larger the treating area, treating volume is larger. if project needs.

Mesh selection:  In reference the solids that need to be filtered.  The mesh# (API#) is number of opening per square inch.  Depend the solids size and density of the mud will determine choice of the screen.

Shale Shakers: There are three different kind of shale shakers (orbital, elliptical and linear). Orbital is a circular motion and elliptical isn’t perfectly circular — it’s an ellipse or oval. Linear has vibration that is induced by a pair of eccentric (or eccentrically weighted) shafts turning in opposite directions. This type of arrangement allows for the development of straight line or linear motion that can also be produced in a positive (uphill) incline.
While each kind of shale shaker has a specific place that it will stand-out from other choices such as unit selling price, the ability to process heavy clays and rock or fines and ultra-fines, our overall preference of choice is the linear.

Hydrocyclones:  desander, desilter and mud cleaner combo machinery are all use various size of hydrocycles to filter the solids from the drilling mud. Each cone size has a micron cut point, which is the size of the smallest particle that the cone can pull out. The 4 inch cones have a micron cut of 20 microns and the 10 inch. have a 74 micron cut.
