The basic parts of the centrifugal pump are rotate impeller.  The speed of impeller is depends on the use of the motor.  The impeller is in the snail-like shell shape casting with curved blade that tied with pump impeller axis and pump shaft driven to perform high speed rotation.   The pump casing central suction inlet and suction piping connections, suction pipe bottom with one-way bottom valve. Outlet beside pump shell connects wih outlet piping equipped with regulating valve. The impeller of such a pump is magnetically coupled with the motor, across a separation wall which is resistant to the fluid pumped. The motor drives a rotor carrying one or several pairs of permanent magnets, and these drag around a second pair(s) of permanent magnets attached to the pump impeller. For the centrifugal pumps that function properly, it needs to be filled with mud prior turn on the pump for working at its own function.  If the pump casing becomes filled with vapors or gases, the pump impeller becomes gas-bound and incapable of pumping.

Drilling fluid serve as lubricant for the drilling bit and it needs filter the solids that produce while the drill bit drilling into earth.  While drilling into the earth, broken solids from the underground mix into the drilling fluid will decrease the lubricant performance and will cost damages of the drill bit that will also result drilling operation on hold that leads increase of operation cost. The solids control machinery ensure the solids separation to ensure the continues operation of the drilling rig to achieve consist operation cost and time efficiency.  Shale shaker, Vacuum degasser, mud cleaner and centrifuge are the basic machinery to achieve the filtrations of solids for the drilling fluid.

Shale shaker is the first step solids control machinery to filter the drilling fluid that filter the large solids by continue shaking force by motors and various API numbers of shale shaker screen.  While it is the first step of filtrations, the result will determine following machineries’ filtering process.

Zero-discharge mud recycle system is loop system that use the drilling mud continually  while performing filtering for solids that contain in the mud.  The function is similar human’s blood system.  To treat the mud properly through solids control, the mud system need to consider in points below:

  • Drilling rig type and spec
  • Speed of the drilling process
  • Solids that will be filter
  • bore length
  • The gallon per minute (GPM) of the pumps
  • Volume and amount of tanks that are needed
  • How many and what size of hydrocyclone
  • The filter screen size for shale shaker and mesh number

These factors determine your mud system that is adequate enough to clean the mud and protect the components and the drill bit of the rig, pumps and mud cleaners.

Treating Capacity:  Rule of thumb, double the actual treating capacity.

The mounting of system; trailer or skid.  Trailer mount is need mount on trailer and it becomes part of the system.  Skid mount is detachable from the flat transportation method.

Shale shaker screen area: Larger the treating area, treating volume is larger. if project needs.

Mesh selection:  In reference the solids that need to be filtered.  The mesh# (API#) is number of opening per square inch.  Depend the solids size and density of the mud will determine choice of the screen.

Shale Shakers: There are three different kind of shale shakers (orbital, elliptical and linear). Orbital is a circular motion and elliptical isn’t perfectly circular — it’s an ellipse or oval. Linear has vibration that is induced by a pair of eccentric (or eccentrically weighted) shafts turning in opposite directions. This type of arrangement allows for the development of straight line or linear motion that can also be produced in a positive (uphill) incline.
While each kind of shale shaker has a specific place that it will stand-out from other choices such as unit selling price, the ability to process heavy clays and rock or fines and ultra-fines, our overall preference of choice is the linear.

Hydrocyclones:  desander, desilter and mud cleaner combo machinery are all use various size of hydrocycles to filter the solids from the drilling mud. Mud agitator is a motorized mixer that is installed on the storage tank to keep fluid consist mixed with additive and avoid separation by gravity.  According to the experience of continues use on the field, the selection of mud mixer should consider to a few points:

  1. Rotation speed: Operators it does not want the cuttings in the mixing process splintered more into smaller debris, so the stirrer speeds cannot be high, the energizer should choose between 50~60rpm. For more than 60rpm of mud mixer, recommended the user to take a cautious on the result of the high rotation speed.
  2. Sealing: According to the feedback of use from the operator. As mixing conditions are not ideal, the drilling fluid mud agitator shaft is not suitable for the use of end face seal, the general packing seal is also hard to use. At present, the more suitable is the use of multiple sets of V type packing. It has self sealing performance and self compensation ability, and long-term maintenance adjustments abilities will not cause lubricating oil leakage problems.
  3. The impeller: There is a variety of mud mixer impeller, but it must take consideration that a small diameter of the blade with high speed of mixer motor have the small amount of circulation, shear force, and therefore does not apply to the use of drilling fluid solid suspension. Therefore, the diameter of the impeller should be consider larger. Second, pay attention to the turbine type impeller has been widely used in the drilling fluid mixer, which is the best open type turbine, because there is no central disc, not to hinder the mixing of the upper and lower liquid phase of the impeller.

GN Solids America LLC’s Decanter centrifuge uses for maintain drilling fluid viscosity.

Drilling fluid containing ultrafine solids that size of 2 micron to 5 micron which has been separated by decanter centrifuge is sent to the storage tank to storage. For achieve the maintenance of the viscosity of the weighted drilling fluid is achieved by removing solids and colloidal particles that can cause high viscosity in the drilling fluid.  The barites discharged from the sediment export are sent back to drilling fluid circulating system for reuse.

The drilling fluid and barites can not be completely separated by using centrifuge during this process because that there are also large size of low density cuttings in the recovery of barites; Similarly,  the drilling fluid in the overflow contains both low density of fine solids and also very small and un-useful  barites particles.

There are use bentonites and finishing agent and also un-useful barites particles in the drilling fluid which is discharged and stored without being used. Therefore, we should add bentonites and treating agent to drilling fluid when adding the fresh liquid to the drilling fluid.

GN Solids Premixing Tank

GN Solids Control is especially good at providing customized solutions for solids and liquid separation. GN Solids Control also manufactures auxiliary treating unit like premixing treating tank, which can be used to premix the high density or large viscosity oil slurry before feeding into shaker or decanter centrifuge.
Heating pipes and mud agitators are assembled on the premixing tank to dilute the slurry and keep the oil slurry from sediment. A submersible pump or screw pump will be used to feed to the backwards shaker or centrifuge. Here is one inquiry we just received for our Mexico customer.

On top of the tank, a shale shaker (GNZ703F-HB) will be used as a scalping screen for the incoming slurry flow into the mixing tank. 850 micron screens or 1,000 micron screens will be used.
An electrical panel for start/stop of the shale shaker, mixers and pump. Also, a tank level control transmitter to control the submersible pump. Ladder, railings and lights included. All electrical is 480 volt and 60 hertz.

Bowl Assembly:


The bowl assembly is including the following 2 parts: a. cylindrical bowl (closed on one end by the liquid bowl head), b. solid bowl head at the other end. The bowl has to be featured with adjustable weirs on the liquid bowl head to permit manual adjustment of the pond depth. Index marks should be provided on the weirs to facilitate precise settings. The tapered bowl extension at the solid end forms an upward sloping beach. Solids are collected and are discharged continuously from the solid discharge outlet. In order to protect the openings from wear, replaceable wear inserts in the solid bowl head Conveyor are used.
The conveyor assembly is a hollow, cylindrical auger with axial/radial flights that receives the inlet slurry into its interior, disperses it through nozzles to the bowl assembly, and transports the solids to the solid discharge outlet. Feed nozzles are using carbide inserts, and on the edge of the conveyor there is carbide tiles provide wear resistance. Two greased ball bearings are mounted in pillow blocks.
Both ends of the conveyor are supported by GN Solids vibration switch shut-off mechanism to automatically disable operation in situations of high vibration, which is optional.
Feed Pump: The package should be included one set feed pump for the centrifuge. The feed pump is a GN 3x2x13-11 centrifugal pump or GN made variable speed positive displacement pump.
